Hi mates: how are u? How is your final diameter size en milimeters for a 13" and 14" snare obviusly when it rounded? Speaking about stave snare drums. I know that is 12 7/8 for a 13" and 13 7/8 for a 14" but precisely in milimeters...how much? Because a Luthier here tell that he use just 13" and 14" because the drum head molds...
Thanks in advance and Happy new year for everyone fron Argentina Last edited by pedroscifo; 12-31-2009 at 05:40 PM. |

Hi pedroscifo,
multiply 13.875 x 2.54 and you'l find exact diameter in mm. (12.875 for a 13)

The same with the 14" snare not 352mm if not he finish the shell 355mm. He tell me that the undersized is more used in a tom or a bass drum not in a snare drum....Greetings |

Almost all drums are that way. Even snares. I do not believe I have ever seen an actual 14" drum.
I have read that a head will not go nicely onto a 14" drum. I think it NEEDS to be 1/8 under. |

My first set of shells are full inch sizes, and none of the heads would fit. I had to build some funky 67,5 degree edges to get the heads on.
So, 1/8 undersize is common size.

For a typical snare drum, it helps to remember that the drumhead itself is 14" so the shell must be less than that. Most are 1/8" less for all except the kick.

I once measured the diameter of my entire set of Kellers (8,10,12,14,16, 22, 14" snare) and found they were very uniform - all almost exactly 1/8" undersized.
I once got the idea that I could make Octobans out of some 6" OD PVC we had lying around at work. I was wrong. While I figured I could force the heads over the end, it wasn't happening. Went and measured and found that the PVC really WAS 6". Just seemed like it was bigger because the head was so far from seating properly.
