View Full Version : Single vs. Double ply mesh heads

I have been trying to find mesh heads in the sizes I need (8",10",12",14" and 13" snare). Not as easy to come by as I would have thought.

In the process, however, I was told that I should use single ply heads for the toms and double ply for the snare. The reason for this, is that the single ply heads won't hold the tension necessary to get a realistic snare feel.

anyone have any experience with this?

thanks

Hmm....all the heads I've seen, are single weave heads. Now, Roland says their plies are laid in different and give better feel and last longer.

All the freying I've ever had, was due to either rough bearing edges, or external damage.

You know, you can use single ply regular drum heads also.

The objective with this setup is to make it as silent as possible, so that I can practice freely without disturbing the neighbors. Regular drum heads, though cheaper and easily obtainable, would unfortunately be at odds with this objective.

I still think that the V-Drum heards are quality.

I have a rubber headed kit, 5 feet from our TV. I practice while the kids are watching TV right behind me. they turn up one click and do just fine. Not saying to forget mesh, just saying that, done with some foam under the acoustic head, and you won't hear it in the next room.

How would the head response be with foam underneath?

You would still get a plastic "thud" - louder than with a mesh head.

Basically, you are going to get a sound no matter what type of head you use. for your e-Drum project, 2 ply mesh is, IMHO, the best way to go.

Are you saying 2 ply all the way around? (toms and snare)

not as good a bounce, but great rolls. However, you also have to adjust sensitivity. Mesh is still the best. My point was:
Mesh. Feels good, good response, little noise
drum head over foam. Feels good, fair response, a bit more noise
rubber (depending on manufacturer), feels OK, good response and even a tad more noise.

Have you checked with Pintech or Hart Electronics for heads also? They are cheaper than Roland.
Also, I offered up the drum head idea only if the mesh was hard to get or way expensive (odd sizes)

I have been looking at the Hart heads. That is probably what I will go with.
In the event that the 2 ply has a feel that seems artificial or whatever, it
is not the end of the world. It looks like the 8" and 14" are off the beaten
track for them, and musiciansfriend.com does not have them, nor does Guitar
Center or Sam Ash.

I used the mesh heads for some time. The 2ply head is recommended for the snare because of durability and feel. The higher you tune these heads, the more sound they will make. I tuned them as low as feel would permit. I went 1ply for toms and 2ply for snare. For snare, consider using some sort of reinforcement like tape right where you hit because it will wear quite quickly otherwise.

Thanks, I will keep that in mind.

Based on experience and research, I'd say if price is less of a concern and quality & feel are most important, then get Roland heads. They feel great and look like regular heads. I also recommend Pintech and possibly Ddrum. I never quite got used to Hart heads.

Just curious as to what it was you didn't get used to.

Rebound, etc. ?

Thanks

You know, aesthetically, I would agree that the Roland V-Drum Heads or the DDrum Heads would be my choice as well. I just prefer the white heads to the black. I am sure that the 2-ply Hart mesh heads in black are of good quality . . . it's just a personal preference of mine that I will use white heads when the time comes.

The overall feel. Too much rebound and I think the mesh is too open. Plus, it looks cheap, like playing window screens.

Not if you use the WHITE ones. ;)
