sup folks,
the names johnny kantor, i'm a 17 year old hoodlum of a drum builder, and i hail from the west end of Bridgeport,CT. Recently, i have gotten the drum building bug. it happened while i was walking down the stairs to my basement to go play, but when i hit my head on the ceiling and fell down the stairs, it hit me(quite literally) i should redo my entire set and build sets for others. So after alot of thought, its now time to add another builder, i am now a representative from Klutz Percussion. I aim to build drums you dont see everyday, such unique percussion peices that would make you cry at the sound of them.

for my first offical project, i wanted to go simple. a snare drum would do because mine sucks. i ordered a keller maple 10 ply 8x14 shell with pre cut bearing edges and snare beds, not to mention a ***** load of hardware. after i completed the multi level staining, i measured it out to line up with the drilling template i made in Autocad.
the project now stands, in its box, waiting to get drilled and assembled. when it is, i'll try to post pictures so everyone can drool at my stain mastery.

i initially got the building bug when my friend asked me to refurbish his old tama 4 piece. i basically was only able to salvage the shells, rims, and drum hanging hardware. after a good amount of money on his part, i ordered all the parts i needed, and took a suspended belt sander to the shells to get the dents and nicks out. then i restained them a candy apple green(diluted auto paint mixed with polyurethane) and put the chrome hardware back on, and soon, i'll put my own badges on them. sadly i cant get a picture of this set, becuase the bastard moved to florida on meand wont use his camera, but is willing to put my badges on the shells.

i'm now working on my own drumset. i plan to do it to match the snare drum, but i just hit a wall on the first shell(didnt sand it good enough, so you see all the scratches in the stain), so its a work in progress. oh, does anyone know what i should do to get the scratches out?

hey folks and fellow builders,
today was a good day. after alot of waiting, i got my snare shell back frm the machine shop, problem was all the holes were either too small or too big. i spent most of the day filing the lug mounting holes out so i could screw them on to the shell, then i put the batter head on and tuned it, and it sounded great, that thing, with only one head on, has some power. i then took it to the machine shop teacher to see it mostly finished, and he was happy with it, and told me to go to the school administratrion office to show it to the principle. and after gettting mauled by all the secretaries with compliments, i showed it to him, and its now in his office waiting to be shown at the staff meeting, and from what i got, they want to start a drum corps, oh joy, i get to make more drums, hopefully. i just have to fix the strainer mounts, turns out i measured them too big, so i have to fix that. but thats it, the snare is .75 complete. yay for me

after i got my half of drum back from my school principle, i put on the other head and rim, and gave it a smack, its loud. i mean really loud, it literally shook the windows, gotta love a good sounding drum. i got the dowels to fix the holes that were too big, and i cut them to size and drilled them out, alittle wood glue, and my snare drum is complete. i put the wire on, so tomarrow i will officially test it out. i thank all who supported my habit here on GN. its thnaks to you i smell like burnt wood.

yes, another project. this time ,i'm going in no mans land, a hybrid segmented snare. a 8x14 snare, with a stripe of acrillic in the middle, and bubinga and maple on the other edges, as far as i know, no body has attempted this, so i will. it should be fun

after letting it sit in my shelf for a matter of weeks, today i picked it up and put it back together. after putting all the chrome back on, i noticed something. it didnt look all that bad. in fact, i liked it. tomarrow i'm going to finish it off, and unwrap another tom.

mine will be quite unique, the colors maybe, but i'm not doing the traditional segment blocks. i'm cutting it into a 2 toned tribal design that will interlock to form the finished product. its gonna be a serious ***** to make, but once i get the machine shop on it next year and get the shells ready, it will be awesome
