Has anyone here attempted building one yet? Also, does anyone know what models work with the Alesis D4 (because its not velocity sensitive)? Could I buy a Roland FD-7 and would that work? Or a similar pedal that is velocity sensitive, and it'd distinguish between open and closed but not in between? Or would it just plain not work?

I would think the Roland would be ideal & possibly attainable on Ebay; although I've got one & would rather keep it with the Roland kit.

I've used the TD-7 with a DM5 and a DMPro and they both worked great. I also use a Pintech pedal, but it doesn't work as well as the TD-7. Get a used td-7 off EBay.

I bought a used Pintech kit that came with a foot switch-style pedal. It's the cheapest one they make. I have an Alesis DM5, which only supports on/off hi-hat pedals anyway, so this works fine. Not at all like the feel of a real hi-hat, but it lets me switch between open/closed "hand" hi hat sounds and trigger whatever I want with my foot.
I'd like to upgrade one day to a hi-hat that can do the range of half-open sounds, but since the DM5 can't handle it anyway, this switch works fine. And it's dirt-cheap.
