What do you think about this cheap 10"x10" Tom Pack (http://www.nationalmusicsupply.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=242)? I was thinking of cutting the shell in half and adding triggers and mesh heads. Then I'll have two finished edrums with minimal labor and most of the hardware. What do you think?
Thanks,
Chris

I never heard of rhythm traveler until now. I'll check 'em out.

Sure, a Pearl Rhythm Traveler is one way to go. However, clsimeone does have a good idea. In fact, I believe I saw a DIY e-Drum project on the internet (somewhere) where someone did, in fact, cut an existing drum in half. Certainly nothing wrong with that.
What you should probably do is price it out between what it would cost for say, a Rhthym Traveler set and buying some "expansion drums" piecemeal. Whichever method is more economical - there ya go.

I like the 10" tom deal if you already have the kit and just want to add a little more. Otherwise the Rhythm Traveler is a good get.

Keep in mind that you'll have the tom mounting bracket to deal with. Check with your local drum shop for some deals on used or "B" stock stuff. The drum shop here (midwest drum and persussion) has tons of "b" stock Pearl stuff that could easily be used and cut down.
Also, check ebay for stuff but be careful on who you deal with.

One thing I forgot - check into getting a maple shell from AIT or someone else here at GN. Sometimes you can get cutoffs that go CHEAP! Then finish them off the way you want. You'll have some additional hardware costs, but it can still be done pretty reasonably.
Actually, I went the AIT route and got my others off of Ebay from a drum builder (Donoho) who specializes in making shallow "speed" toms. I ended up with an 8",10",12" and 14" for just 45.00.
The good thing about the AIT cutoffs is the cost. The only drawback, as I see it, is that the vast majority of shells in the cutoff bin are 13" and 14" shells. These are great for practicing your bearing edge cutting skills, but most of us are not looking for an entire edrum set where the smallest tom is 13" (although I am sure I don't speak for everyone).

I thought the same thing when I went rumaging through the AIT cut-off bin.
JLee has the right idea about gong the AIT route as well. In fact, generally you can get 2 - 3 shells out of one tube (depending on the diameter and such).

Wow, great information. The AIT route sounds great to me. Is AIT a member here or is there a link for AIT anywhere?
Also, I'm picking up some 10" and 12" PVC pipe cut-offs this afternoon from a local plumbing contractor. He says he has some different lengths and that I can have them. We'll see how that will work out.
Thanks again,
Chris

Thanks Tom!
The Link to AIT (known as Anderson Trading International) is www.aitwood.com.
You can buy shells in a variety of sizes online, and as Tom said, you probably will come out ahead this way. I am not sure if they would sell you cutoffs online, nor do I know where you are located. However, I think when you look at a 10" dia by 16" length shell - you will see that you probably can get four shells out of that alone, if they are cut shallow for edrums. Since you are talking $50 for that shell, that comes out to 12.50 per edrum shell (plus shipping, of course). Not half bad.

Just give them a call and they'll tell you what they have in the cutoff bin. It's worth a shot.
