Hi. Every now and again, I get a gong or a pair of maracas or one of those energy chimes from someone in my family. Stuff like this never gets used...it just ends up in a box somewhere in the attic.

I have a 10" K splash cymbal that gets used sometimes...but not a lot...so, I decided to marry it with a 10" gong and make a funky pair of hi-hats.

Whoops! Um...the order of the pics should be reversed...but you get the idea.

How does it sound? Well.....

Very nice. So how does it sound?

A few years ago I drilled a hole in a 22" Wuhan wind gong. It's a very interesting flat ride: very dry, trashy and controlled, but the crash is pure china! I really like it.

Got it at Manny's music for $75 bucks.

Yeah, how they sound?!

I made a set of mini-hats out of a Paiste 8" cup chime for the bottom and a sabian 8" AA splash on top. It's fun stuff.

Well, they sound really...unlike any other pair of hats I have played. ;) The closest I can describe them is "quick". As far as playing the 2 & 4 for jazz stuff...no good...too quiet. However, if used for breakbeat stuff like drum n bass riffs, and played with sticks, they are pretty cool. The rivets don't really do much. But, at least the gong will get SOME use. It might actually be a cool thing for an X-hat. Total cost was whatever I paid for the K splash...which I THINK was about $30.00...can't remember. For $30 they sound good enough....not very versatile, though...kind of a one trick pony.

I did a similar sort of thing with a 12" rock splash drilled with tambourine jingles (bottom) and regular 12" AA top hi-hat cymbal. Gave me a very aggressive bright tone like water dropping into hot fat sort of sound.
Unusual setup=>unusual sounds :cool: ;)
