I am interested in purchasing an either 10" or 12" gong, in the low to mid. price range. Does anyone have any recomendations? If so where could I purchase it?

Thanks for your help,
E-D

A lot depends on what type of sound you want. A small Chau (heavy with turned over edge) gong will give a fairly solid sound in that size. A Wind gong (flat, thin) will be fairly quick and crashy. An Opera gong will have either an ascending or decending pitch when struck. Any sort of Bossed (with a raised nipple in the center) gong will give a very solid, pitched sound. A 12˝ Chau or Wind or Opera gong should run around $40-50. A Bossed gong will run more, probably $50-120. Paiste has a great 13˝ Accent gong that has a great sound for its size and runs around $100.

Places to check are:

I would suggest contacting http://www.steveweissmusic.com in Philly. I've gotten a lot of gongs from them and they are great to deal with. Their phone number is on the website and you can call Steve personally about gongs. He may even play some stuff for you over the phone. Try them 1st.

If Steve doesn't have what you need, try https://www.percussionsource.com:9998/home.htm
They are in Iowa and have a great selection of stuff. Nice people to deal with too.

If neither of those work out you can try http://www.larkinam.com/MenComNet/Business/Retail/Larknet/Gongs
(lark in the morning in California). I've never bought from them, but have friends who have and say they are great people to deal with.

I hope this helps.

What kind of music do you play? I don't hear many gongs being utilized these days - not even by RUSH anymore.

has a killer example of a gong being used, without it sounding so totally obvious...

Steve Weiss is definately the guy to call. They have a crazy amount of gongs in stock, all imported by Steve directly. Check out this link:

I'm not sure who you directed this question to, but click on my website at the bottom of my signature and go to my MP3 page to hear some of my gong compositions. I use a lot of gongs (40 of them) and play original solo percussion music.

Yeah, not a lot of guys use them anymore, but they are amazing instruments.

Here's a good, if minimal, utilization of a gong. :D Click on the picture below the Quicktime logo.

Well, I had directed the question at Esoteric_Drums . . . more out of curiosity than anything.

Minimalist - your brand of music msot definitely warrants the gongs. (IN fact, it would almost appear that it is BASED ON gong work).

As for the Danny Carey video (which I just watched), can't say that I am all that impressed.
Seems like it was just something do throw in there to draw attention away from his simplistic playing. ;)

well, I play many styles of music, but mainly i play DnB and ostinato groove patterns, something similar to minimalist, but more grove oriented(if that makes and sense :D ).
thanks for the intrest tho hehe.
