I was told by Bill Zildjian of Sabian cymbals that by sandblasting a cymbal you can achieve the same effect as a hand hammered cymbal has. Well I have an old Zildjian (which btw I installed rivets in, and was thinking about taking it over to my uncles shop and give it a blast.

Has anyone ever tried this before? Any comments welcomed.

Seems I'm not the only insomniac around! Yeah I'm thinking I will give it try.

I was hanging with Bill when Sabian made a stop for the Vault tour at a local drum shop (Jersey Drums and Percussion). I was just working my way down, testing all the cymbals when I bumped into him. We started talking and continued the whole night. It was cool because then Dom Famularo came over, and we started talking, then Mr. Purdie came over, and we talked a little (he's a bit intimidating, with all the bling and whatnot). I should also mention Jay Medynski just cause he's a good guy, he played with the Goo Goo Dolls.

It was an awesome night.

actually, sand blasting will only roughen up the surface and harden it a tad, not very deep like a peen hammer would.
You can also shot-peen the metal. Auto racers do this to stuff like connecting rods. It toughens up the metal by compresing it (just like those well placed hammer blows). Same process, different material in the blaster, different nozzle tip, etc....

I met walt frasier, mel davis and spencer haywood in the LA airport. ok...they're not dom, BP or zildjian but I had to get on the "me too, me too" wagon here :D

that's acutally a very cool story and sounds like a really cool night to be hanging out. did purdie have to hurry off for a quick session or anything?

Dom Famularo is one nice guy. RJ and i had a few conversations with him at NAMM. Well, Concerning the sandblasting, I might give it a shot on one of my rides.

I met Dom in Mesa Arizona at Milano's Music. He was at a clinic with Walfredo Reyes Sr. Both of those cats are absolutely awesome. Walfredo Reyes Sr. has some unbelieveable independence.
