View Full Version : Hat question!
I'm in the mood for some good, all around, all-purpose hat that will cover a variety of music - Rock - Jazz - Blues. From what I've read the New Beats are most likely to fit this bill - would this really be the case? Are they better alternatives? I'm open to any and all suggestions! Thanks!

Dan,
I have a pair of 14" new beats and I love them. I pretty much only play rock and blues. They work great. Don't play much jazz in a group setting but occaisionally I'll shuffle a little by myself. And they sound fine. They sound good played with the pedal and played with brushes. Of course every pair is different, but I know mine are very musical, you can crash them, basically Ive never had any trouble getting any sound out of them I want. They are fairly bright though. You might want something darker if you are going to play lots of jazz but for hats that can do it all, I think they fit they bill.
And I don't know if this helps any but there are lots of pairs on Ebay all the time and they usually go for around $100. So if you get a used pair and don't like them you can probably turn around and sell them for the same price.
Hope that helps

I also have a pair of old NewBeats. But from some of the jazz players I've talked to, they are a bit heavy for jazz. I still play jazz with them, but they can be quite heavy at times. For rock and blues they do wonders thats for sure.
For awhile there, I was using a New Beat top, as my top hh and a Zcustom top as my bottom. Sounded awesome. Great chick, nice open sound, and nice volume. I know it would be hard to find them as a pair like that but, it was just a suggestion.

Pat, I was thinking the same thing. Paiste Signature Dark Crisp hats are very versitile and will work in most musical situations.

Nice suggestion! I'm not a "name" person, I'm a sound person.
I'm going to some shops and try out some of these recommendations.
Thanks again!

Nice Hats! I have those in my sites as my next pair, I only have 6 sets of hats!
check out Sabians' HHX grooves there are very versitle and can be had on ebay fairly cheap. I paid 140.00 for mine and they were brand new

Nice, i played a few set of hand hammered sabians, but never the HHX's. I did like the HH's though!
OOOooohhhh, Paiste Dark Crisps.... MMMM!!! I love mine!
My next set will be set of (i think) Paiste 13" signature Sound Edges (on an x-hat)

You cant go wrong wih the 13in Paiste Dark Crisp hats. Also consider 14in Paiste Signature Medium hats. They are a good "middle of the road" set of hats. As long as the music doesnt get beyong Rock'n'Roll intensity they do quite well, and easily versitile enough for Blues and Jazz.

my 14 inch sign mediums are very versatile. They are many hats which are considered versatile, just go to the shop and see which one sounds best to you.

I use 14" Newbeats at church, and 13" Mastersounds with my personal set. They both fit their respective roles quite nicely (I use my home set for mostly heavier rock). I would recommend the Mastersounds over the Newbeats, personally, because they're tighter and not as 'swashy' because they have that rippled bottom edge for a tighter chick. Obviously this makes them well suited for rock, and if Newbeats were pushing the limit for brightness, Masters would definitely be too bright. So I recommend Newbeats for your situation, but ideally I would get something else as your primary hats (like the aforementioned Dark Crisps) and get a set of Masters on a remote or something, they are perfect for all kinds of rock, very clean and crisp.

I dig the 13" K/Z's. I have yet to come across a situation where they didn;t fit the bill.
