well. this is not the 1st time this has happened. i cracked a 16 inch medium custom crash a while back. my warranty had not expire for the year, so i was able to bring it to my local music shop, and for 25 bux, they sent it in. zildjian then i think refinnished it or something. ( they fixed the crack and made it look like new again for free. but more recently i cracked my 17 incher. ( i play hard) same everything, just 17 intsead of 16. and i wanna send it in how much do they charge since the warranty is up? does anyone have experiances like this?

I can bet that Zildjian didn't fix the cymbal; they just gave you a new one. And with the warranty up on the 17, I can also bet that they won't give you a new one.

logamos2001...

Yeah, once a cymbal cracks...that's it. There is no "fixing" it. Your 16" was replaced. To answer your question about the 17" and the warranty is up, your gonna have to buy a new one.

Since you said you play hard, a suggestion. Buy some Aquarian cymbal springs. They do work & will give you some extra mileage, so to speak. You may also want to look into larger diameter cymbals. If you play hard & use 16" crashes, you will just keep destroying them. This comes from another "hard hitter" who has learned over the years.

Here's a tip..don't by z's...the hammering is so prone to cracking...

I should really say much...I have 5 z's hahahahahaha

Also, along with the cymbal springs: tilt your cymbals just a slight bit more in towards you. I got it off of Paiste's website, tried it, and it helps take a little shock off your hands, and protects your cymbals more.

I agree with Kan about the large diameter cymbals. Im prone to fits of bashing so I've cracked my share of little cymbals. Now I try not to own anything smaller than a 19. Also, contrary to what you might think, go for thin. I know this is sometimes debated but personally I think the flex in thin cymbals keeps them from cracking. Nothing worse IMO than a cymbal whose edges don't wobble.

And big cymbals are very versatile, you can get ride sounds from crashes and crash sounds from rides. You can't really ride a 16.

Make sure the cymbals are not tilted too much. You want them to be able to freely rock. Less keyholing, less 'hard stop' when hit (and they can't move), which is why the springs can help.

One thing I experienced is that heavier cymbals break more often. I know this sounds ridiculous at first, but when you consider that a heavier cymbal doesn't flex as much as a thinner one does, it makes good sense. A thinner cymbal is going to allow the pressure from your stick hitting it to spread more evenly across the cymbal, and more quickly. I have used so many different crash cymbals, and the only ones I have broken are the really heavy ones like Z customs and Metal AAs. (exception being a Sound Control cymbal from Sabian that I really enjoyed the sound of. Sabian replaced it, and the replacement broke a few weeks later. These cymbals had a little flattened out flange, and I suspect this is why they broke so quickly. Plus I beat the **** out of 'em.)

I wouldn't think so. All depends on how you play your ride. I have busted every cymbal you can on a kit except a ride as I use a ride as a ride & not as a big ass crash. That's what 20" crashes are for! I mostly play hard/heavy music & got the appropriate ride(s) too. It would have taken a ball peen hammer to bust one.

A recommendation...Get the red colored cushion springs for crashes & the yellow colored cushion springs for the china. If your china is kinda thin, then you can get away with the red ones on that too.

wow interesting thread, not been here much.

im a very hard hitter & the smallest crash i use is a 18 medium, 16s just have no flex when you lay into them, so my advice is go large but stick to heavy weights not because of the flexing but because of stress, you need to get the balance of flex (larger sizes, tilted cymb & springs to act as shock absorbers help this) but you need the thicker & heavy weight as the density will prove more resilient to the constant use.

i get alot of stick because i use large cymbals & mainly Z's & the only problams i now have is with china's, my favorite cymbal but i break several in a year.

I had that problem myself to. I've broken about 6 zildjian china's (ranging from Avedis to Z-custom) in two years. After three months they just cracked around the 'folded' area. Everytime I returned it to the store I had to wat three or more months for the distributer in Holland to send me a new one (and those guys are SLOW!). So I switched to a paiste signature heavy china. Sounds great, a bit more 'gritty' than an A-Custom china but I'm using it for about two years now.
A friend of mine had the same problem and he also switched to Paiste.

So my advice; If you tend to break Zildjian china's alot; try and switch brands. It might not look as purdey as a full set of A or Z customs but it saves you alot of time and frustration.

i've cracked 2 z customs, replaced them sold them. got other cymbals. They are too obnoxious for me. I have an 18inch wuhan that is DEAFENING it's really bad. i have to tape a piece of paper towel on it to calm that sucker down.
