View Full Version : Cone Density!

Ok this may have been covered before but I cannot find anything about it. I cannot get hold of the roland cones in time for xmas as they are out of stock at Musicians Friend and shipping to the UK seems to have messed up as with alot of our orders so I am going to attempt making my own by stacking foam circles, wont be a perfect cone more like a stepped cone.
However I am wondering of the density of the material, is it like a real soft foam or more like the back of a mouse pad foam? could I get away with using one of the vic firth practise pad things you put on your kit as I have one lying about. It appears to be like a 6mm thick piece of fairly dense neoprene.
Any help greatly appreciated!
Cheers
Francis

um, i think silky had the idea of using makeup applicatior foam things. I am using rolands, but the make up foam would be pretty similar in density. they need to be really squishy, but also give resistance. I think the makeup stuff will work fine.
oh, and sorry, but im not familiar with the vic practice pad stuff. sorry.
also, im really looking forward to seeing your kit. your work is awesome. im sure yours in gonna kick mine in the face.

Drumbalaya has Roland foam cones in stock... they're $9 US a piece though, $1 more than Musiciansfriend. I just got one today... might give them a try if you're still looking to buy and they'll ship to ya.

Thanks Boobus,
I managed to find an awesome source for cone material today £4 UKP or about $7 for a sheet 8mm thick by 1800mm long by 450mm wide and its perfect, stack 5 pieces cut and works like a dream. I have enough material to make about 100 cones at least!!!
Thanks for the added info tho
Cheers
Francis
