View Full Version : What would be the best mesh head for a kick drum

Well, I probably should have thought of this earlier, but the impulse to go ahead and build an electronic kick drum got the better of me, and I got a 15" x 7" maple cutoff from AIT, leveled, finished it and edged before realizing one thing:

. . . 15" mesh heads are not a very common size!!

My options seem to be limited to Drumbalaya.com, as they carry a 15" Hart single ply and a Ddrum mesh head of indeterminate ply.

So, the question is this:

Do you think the single ply mesh head will work reasonably well, or should I just pack it in, do something else with the shell and go back to the drawing board with a 14" or 16" that would give me more mesh head options?

Thanks in advance.

In thinking about the Pearl Traveler or the Roland V-Kick, I would think that if you tighten the head enough, you shouldn't have a problem with the single ply head.

Although, if it were me (and sometime next year, it will be), I would go with a double-ply if you can find one.

That's just it. In the 15" size, it would appear that double ply mesh heads simply do not exit.

I guess I will go with the single ply, tighten it up and hope for the best.
