OK I am just starting to get into electronic drums so I'll try not to sound to ignorant!
I've been thinking of adding 1 or 2 pads to my acoustic kit.
I want to use them mainly for extra sounds and maybe to replace lugging around
congas, bongos, timbales and a gong.
would I be able to reproduce these sounds with the right samples?
If so, any suggestions on the right equipment to look into or articles to check out?

Thanks!

yes, should work great. cheapest way is to pick up two small drums. then, add to each, a acoustic drum trigger to that. Muffle them up, so only year hear them and can trigger the rest. buy a used brain off ebay. Alesis DM4 or 5, or a Roland Td-8. Two instrument cables to hook the triggers into the brain. You can "out" off the brain into an amplifirer...even your home sterio! to hear it and experiment.

Another way some do it, but cost more. You could upgrade to this. Buy on ebay a DrumKat machine. 10 pads. A DK10 would work great. Put it on a snare stand. Use a Midi cable to connect to your brain (same one). You now have 10 instruments!!!, one stand, one instrument (plus brain) and one cable!!! 10 not enough? well, foot switch to a new DrumKat kit and have 10 more!!!! Dk's, drumkats etc are usually on ebay. start pricing now. Be aware of the Kat brain number, for future fixes and upgrades. check out www.alternatemode.com for a LOT of information about electronics.
