So I'm in a little bit of a tough situation here...I just recieved my DM5 yesterday (100 bucks from a friend - very sweet deal) and I plan on triggering my kick and running it through the alesis. The only problem is that there is not a single music store in all of Arizona (that I've found) that is carrying Roland Kick triggers right now. They either don't carry them or are out of stock. But I did find a guitar center with a roland tom trigger, and my question is wouldn't that work a lot like a kick trigger? I don't know hardly anything about electronics especially with drums, but it all sounds like its the same principle so what's the differnece between a tom and kick trigger? Thanks guys.

i wouldnt risk it. buy one online. it'll be the right part and it might be cheaper/

very true, thats what I was thinking, except that GC price matches and kick triggers are $70 while tom triggers are around $30.

They are different in a physical standpoint but not electronically. Usually the bass drum triggers clip onto bass drum hoops that are 1.5"-2" wide as opposed to toms where the rim is a half inch or so above the head. The bass drum triggers are bigger to reach the head while sitting on the big hoop.

Why not make your own? Be creative. You can get the parts for less than $10: piezos and jacks and whatnot.

I'm building my own kit as we speak (only with a D4...you lucky dog...).

Anyway, all I'm sayin is it'd be pretty cheap to DIY...ponder it...ponder it...

I just finished my diy with a D4 and am already wanting to upgrade to the DM5. If you already have the D4 dont sweat as its still a great module with tons of sounds but if not I would really consider trying to find a DM5. The D4 not being velocity sensitive is a bummer.

Andy,

I used to play on an acoustic/electric kit for years here in Phoenix, layering triggers and mics and anything else I could come up with. I still have my ddrum3, and had a d4 and dm5 for a long time as well. I'm not sure if I can help you with your problem but depending on the trigger mounting system a trigger is a trigger, kinda like a doorbell really. I'm not familiar with Rolands stuff, but I still have a lot of other junk laying around that I'm not using anymore. Since we're both in the same town, might be easy to give you a hand on this one. PM me if you want to try some junk or something.

Thanks for the offer letusprey, and if I wasn't under the time constraint that I was I would have most definitely taken you up on that. I was just looking for a quick fix to not being able to find a kick trigger because I was a little too anxious to test it out at a gig this friday, and of course my anxiousness got the best of me and I just had it 2-dayed to my hosue through samash.com. The whole diy electric kit concept sounds like a cool idea though... can anyone give me a guesstimate on how much a 5 peice would cost to make yourself? Maybe mesh heads or something, like those cool roland v drums I think they are. and would my dm5 work with something like that?

the dm5 will work with it and I made my 4 piece mesh head set for just under $500 which includes a roland rack and D4.

yeah and then 3 cymbals but the cymbals are really ghetto. just pieces of wood with a piezo glued to them and mousepad over that

I've tried a number of DIY as well as Ddrum Redshots and the Roland BD trigger. Quite honestly, the Roland is the best I've come across. I find it much better than the Redshot on both my Roland TD8 and Ddrum4 modules.

Well correct me if I'm wrong...and I'm often wrong :D But the Roland tom and kick triggers are different also in the way they pick up the signal. The tom triggers i thought got the pick up from the rim itself whereas the kick received from the head. Again this might not make a difference but something to think of.

Why thankyou skaman, anyone know if I'm right about the triggers though?
