hi guys, i apologize for not doing a search on this, as im sure it been covered before, but i dont even know where to start (or what to search for!). i would like to have one drum pad that i can set to hit and trigger samples. ive no idea what i need or what the deal is with these things...if someone could point me in the right direction and give me a quick break down of what i'll need to get started, that'd be ace.

thanks again

You could give this a shot:

However, keep in mind that I know next to nothing about electronic drums, I have no idea how you would hook up the brains to trigger it, or even what you would need, but at $50, the price is right.

you'll need 1 pad, a mount, and a "brain" aka module, as well as a cable.
also a PA or some sort of amplification if you're in a band (I suggest a good, big keyboard amp, look at peavey).

that's a great pad for your goal. it's small, easily positioned, easily hidden. you can stick it between your mid and floor tom, or between your hats and hi tom with no troubles. gimmie some pics of your kit and i'll tell you what mounting hardware you'll need. (it comes with a lil' clamp)

Now you'll need just a module. The standard (esp. here on GN, i find) is the Alesis DM5:

(offers plenty of room if you want to start triggering your acoustics, or adding other effects, etc. etc.!)
this is my personal favorite for your price range:

Now you'll just need a good 10' (or less, probably 5') TS cable and you're set!

I have a question related to this - I recently picked up a Yamaha Clickstation and one of the things that you can do with it is to start it and stop it via a trigger through the trigger-in plug. Has anyone ever done this? The trigger pad in the post above looks like it might be a good way to go for that sort of solution.

Another question - do the trigger pads need an external power source? How do they work?

the trigger itself won't, but to get the sound out you will. the trigger works very similarly to the button of your computer mouse.

You can also go this way:

Buy cheap (as long as it has reasonable low latency) module with midi/in out, midi in module for pc (doesnt cost much ...like 20 bucks), then a pc with program on which you load in the samples in. Headphones ---> and you're set.
This way you're not limited by the sounds which are on your module (such as the Alesis dm5) and you can mix and match a lot :)

i think what he is looking for is something more of a sample pad. the drummer form deathcab for cutie uses one. this guy is a really good drummer. he plays open handed. anyways i think he uses a roland one. it has like 16 square pads and the thing has the samples so you dont need a module.
EDIT: i found it:

is that waht yer lookin for? thing is... it's 600 some buckx
this one is a bit cheeaper and you can record your own sounds. and prolly find em on th einternet somewhere. http://www.rolandus.com/products/details.asp?catid=5&subcatid=26&prodid=SPD%2DS

But do you need a computer hooked up to it the whole time you play or for just recording sounds?

if the soundfile you're playing is on a computer, then yes you'll probably want a laptop playing at all times.
if it's preprogrammed into a brain, like the DM5 or whatnot, then you don't even need a computer.

no it has built in memory it also have compact flash so you can put the sounds on the card form your pc and then put it in there and have the sonds. i'e been wanting one for awhile. the price is a bit steep for my high school budget.

I had one for a long time (not the 20, forget what it was called - 12?).
I just sold it a few weeks ago (because I'm moving from Germany to the US in two weeks).
There was never any problem with it.
Great sounds and I made quite a few bucks "recording" with it in midi studios.
